Is Blueberry Lemon Water Healthy?
Lemon-infused water offers a myriad of benefits on its own. Adding blueberries offers an extra burst of flavour and nutrients.
Health Benefits
Digestive health. Blueberries can enhance the digestive benefits of lemon water, as they are an excellent source of prebiotic fibre.
Skin-loving. Blueberries contribute to the vitamin C content in lemon water, while also providing antioxidants, including anthocyanins, which can support healthy aging. The delicious flavour also makes staying hydrated easy and enjoyable.
Heart-healthy. Blueberry consumption can promote blood flow and blood vessel dilation, which may contribute to lower blood pressure and improved heart health.
Cognition and brain health. The antioxidants found in blueberries may help maintain cognitive function and memory as we age.
Blood sugar balance. Blueberries are a low-glycemic fruit and can help regulate insulin uptake.
Seasonal Benefits
Spring is a great season to reap the digestive-stimulating and detoxifying benefits of lemon.
Summer is an important time to stay well-hydrated. Infusing seasonal fruit, such as blueberries, is a delicious and refreshing way to make sipping water more enjoyable while adding additional nutrients.
How to Make Lemon Blueberry Infused Water
Making infused blueberry lemon water is incredibly simple! It only requires 3 ingredients and a few minutes of time. It can also be tailored to your taste and is delicious garnished with a variety of herbs.
What You Will Need
Equipment
- Pitcher or jar large enough to hold at least 1 quart (4 cups). If serving a large party or a big family, you can toggle the switch in the recipe card to double or triple the recipe.
- Pestle or wooden spoon to release blueberry juices.
- Measuring utensils for accuracy
Ingredients
- Filtered water for the purest flavour and to reduce exposure to toxins. You can also use sparkling water for a special touch.
- Frozen blueberries offer the most refreshing touch for summer. However, fresh blueberries also work.
- Fresh lemon offers the best flavour and most nutrients. You can squeeze in the juice only or add slices with the rind for additional digestive benefits.
- Fresh herbs (optional) can add a delicious touch. My favourites to use are either mint, lemon balm, lavender or rosemary.
- Ice (optional) for a cold and refreshing drink.
Step 1: Muddle Blueberries
Pour the blueberries into a pitcher, glass or jar. Use a pestle or wooden spoon to gently crush them, releasing their juices. If you prefer a milder flavour, you can skip the crushing.
Step 2: Add Remaining Ingredients
Next, cut half of the lemon into slices and squeeze the juice from the remaining half into the pitcher, glass or jar. If the lemons are extra seedy or you are making this for kids to enjoy as well, you can remove the seeds from the slices, and before squeezing in the juice.
Place the lemon slices around the edges, leaving a few for garnishing. If you are adding ice, place the ice cubes in the middle of the lemon slices. Then, pour in the filtered water. Add a sprig of your choice of herb (if desired). I like using either lemon balm, mint, lavender, or rosemary.
Step 3: Infuse
Allow the water to infuse for a minimum of 2 to 5 minutes.
If drinking or serving immediatly, you can leave the fruit in as you sip. However, if you will be storing it for later, seal with a lid and keep it refrigerated. You can let the fruit infuse for 1 to 3 hours in the fridge before it will need to be strained.
If you will be storing the infused water for longer than 3 hours, strain out the fruit and place the water back in the fridge in a well-sealed jar, bottle or pitcher.
Step 4: Garnish
Pour the infused water over ice and garnish with extra blueberries, a slice of lemon and optional herbs like mint or lemon balm.
My Top Tips
- Strain the lemon after 30 minutes to 1 hour for the best flavour.
- Use frozen blueberries for an extra cold and refreshing summer drink.
- Muddle the blueberries if you prefer a stronger blueberry flavour. This helps to release the sugars and juices.
- Use organic lemon and blueberries to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals. Lemons are often waxed, so organic is the best choice, especially when using the rind. Blueberries are typically high on EWG's Dirty Dozen list. So, it is ideal to use wild (gathered from clean areas), organic, homegrown or picked from a pesticide-free farm.
Substitutions & Variations
Add more or less blueberries and lemon if you prefer a stronger or milder flavour. You can also adjust the ratio of lemon to blueberries to your taste.
Fresh blueberries can be used instead of frozen. They will release more juices, infusing faster. You can add ice to keep it cold.
Sparkling water can be used to make a fizzy drink for an extra special touch.
Fresh mint makes a delicious and refreshing addition to this infused water.
Fresh lemon balm can add to the citrusy lemon flavour.
Dried lavender can add delicious floral notes that complement both the sweet flavour of blueberry and the citrusy flavour of lemon.
Fresh rosemary can add an earthy and vibrant flavour.
How Long Does Blueberry Lemon Infused Water Last?
I love making infused water to keep in the fridge for a quick grab-and-go drink on sun-filled summer days.
To store this infused water for longer than 2 hours, simply strain out the fruit, seal the water in an airtight jar, and keep it refrigerated. It can last up to 2 days in the fridge once the fruit has been strained out.
That being said, if the water and fruit have been sitting at room temperature for longer than 2 hours, it is best to discard them both and start with a new batch.
For the best flavour, I find it is best to store infused lemon water in a glass jar or container. It's also ideal to avoid toxins that can leach from plastic.
