Is Hot Lemon Water Good For You?

From digestion and detoxification to cold-kicking nutrients, Hot Lemon Water can provide many health benefits!

    Hot Lemon Water Benefits

Promotes digestion. Drinking warm or lukewarm water alone can improve digestion. Adding lemon adds an alkalizing effect and can balance pH levels, further improving digestion and nutrient absorption.

Stimulates detoxification. Lemon is rich in liver-supporting nutrients, while its sour taste can stimulate the detoxification process. Drinking water is also the best way to flush out toxins.

Immune-supporting. Rich in immune-supporting nutrients, including vitamin C, along with antibacterial and antiviral properties, Hot Lemon Water is a great cold-buster and soar-throat soother.

Skin-loving. Water consumption is one of the best ways to maintain skin health. Between the detox-stimulating properties, vitamins A, B6, C, folic acid and calcium, adding lemon to warm water provides additional benefits that can contribute to naturally glowing skin.

    Seasonal Benefits

Spring is one of the best times to support our livers and detoxification systems with naturally sour-tasting foods like lemon.

Summer is a crucial time to stay hydrated. Drinking warm water first thing in the morning is a great way to do so. Lemon adds a refreshing flavour and many benefits.

Autumn and winter is a time when many tend to drink more tea, coffee and hot cocoa. Hot lemon water is a great way to stay hydrated while enjoying a warm cuppa.

How to Prepare Hot Lemon Water

Making Hot Lemon Water is incredibly simple and can easily be adjusted to your taste. All you need is 2 ingredients and a few minutes.

    What You Will Need

    Equipment

    • Kettle / Stovetop - To boil the water.
    • Sharp Knife -To slice the lemon.
    • Mug - To sip your hot lemon water out of.

    Ingredients

    • Fresh Lemon. Organic is best, especially if you will be using the rind.
    • Filtered / Spring Water is best for detoxification.

    Step 1: Boil Water

Bring filtered or spring water to a boil.

    Step 2: Slice Lemon

While the water is boiling, cut a lemon into slices or wedges.

    Step 3: Steep Lemon

There’s no right or wrong way to make hot lemon water.

One way is to squeeze the juice of a lemon wedge into your mug. You can also add the rind or sliced rounds for added digestive benefits and vitamin C.

Another way is to simply place a few sliced lemon rounds into your mug.

Once you’ve added your lemon, pour the boiled water over. Allow it to cool for a few minutes before sipping.

You can remove the lemon rinds once you’re satisfied with the strength. If left too long, the rinds can create a bitter taste.

However, if you will be drinking your lemon water quickly, leaving the rind in adds more nutritional value and digestive benefits.

    How Much Lemon to Use

It all depends on your taste and desired effects. I tend to use about ¼ of a lemon per 16oz of water. As mentioned above, you can just use the juice or add the rind for additional benefits.

    My Top Tips

    • Use fresh lemon for the best flavour.
    • Use organic lemons to avoid harmful pesticides.
    • Rinse lemon before slicing if using the rind.
    • Use filtered water to reduce toxic load.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Hot Lemon Water

Drinking warm lemon water on an empty stomach can stimulate appetite and digestive juices. For best results, drink 20 minutes before meals.

Hot lemon water in the morning can help to balance pH levels and flush out toxins.

Sipping hot lemon in the afternoon or evening is a great way to enjoy a warm, caffeine-free cuppa.

Add raw honey to help soothe a sore throat or kick a cold. It can also help lessen the sour flavour and make it more palatable for some. You can add up to 1 teaspoon, depending on your taste.

Add ginger root for a tummy-soothing and immune-supporting tea.

Consume in moderation to avoid wearing down tooth enamel.

    FAQs

Can I drink hot lemon water while pregnant?

It is typically safe for pregnant women to consume lemon water. For some, it can even help to alleviate nausea and vomiting. However, it is always best to consume in moderation and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.

Can I drink hot lemon water while fasting?

Lemon water is low enough in calories and carbohydrates that it won't break the fasting state. Some believe it can even enhance the benefits of fasting. However, it's important to note that it can be an appetite stimulant, which could leave some in an uncomfortable state of hunger.

How to make hot lemon water taste better?

If you want to reduce the bitter taste of lemon water, simply add the juice without the rind. You can also add up to 1 teaspoon of raw honey to add natural sweetness.
