Is Homemade Sour Green Apple & Lime Soda Healthy?

This Homemade Green Apple and Lime Soda is a much healthier option for many reasons. It's hydrating, naturally sweet, and made with nutritious, whole-food ingredients that offer immune-supporting and detoxifying properties.

    Immune Supporting

This healthy homemade soda is full of immune-supporting nutrients and free of immune-suppressing sugars!

    Rich In Quercetin

Apples are a great source of quercetin. However, the skin of the apple contains the most concentrated amount. That's why it's always best to opt for organic / non-sprayed apples.

Quercetin is a potent antioxidant that has quite the immune-supporting power. It helps to ward off the common cold and flu and can even reduce allergy symptoms and inflammatory responses.

It's also the main medicinal ingredient in an elusive pharmaceutical that starts with an H. Wink, wink.

    Rich In Vitamin C

Both apples and limes are great sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C is another key player in immune health and antioxidant activity.

Vitamin C is a nutrient that the body doesn't produce itself, so our bodies rely on food sources (or supplementation). It's also a nutrient that is very easily depleted, especially under stress.

However, one great thing about vitamin C is that it's water-soluble, which means the body simply excretes any excess. So, there is absolutely no harm in eating an abundance of vitamin C rich foods!

    Free of Refined Sugar

Refined sugar is a major culprit that suppresses the immune system for hours after ingestion. Thankfully, this does not mean the naturally occurring sugars in fruits and vegetables do the same.

Consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables (preferably organically grown) is one of the best ways to support the immune system. This ensures we get all the vital nutrients needed to keep our bodily systems optimally functioning.

Thanks to the fresh green apple and lime juice, this Healthy Sour Green Apple Soda is naturally sweet. So, no added sugars of any kind are necessary.

    Stimulates Digestion

Fresh juice is full of beneficial enzymes that aid in the breakdown and absorption of nutrients. Plus, both apple and lime contain digestive stimulating properties.

    Detoxifying

The sour taste stimulates two of our most important detoxifying organs, the gallbladder and the liver. Plus, if you add in a dash of spirulina it gives it an extra boost of detoxifying nutrients.

Made With Simple Whole Food Ingredients

Requiring only four simple, real-food ingredients, this Healthy Homemade Green Apple Soda is free of artificial colours, additives, and added sugars. Also meaning, this refreshing drink is suitable for many dietary requirements and restrictions.

This mouth-watering Sour Green Apple Soda is free of nuts, dairy, gluten and oil. It's also vegan and paleo-friendly!

Seasonal Benefits of Sour Green Apple & Lime Soda

This Healthy Sour Green Apple and Lime Soda makes a revitalizing spring sip and a hydrating summer drink!

    Spring

    Sour Taste

There are a couple of reasons this Green Apple and Lime Soda is perfect for spring. First, the sour taste is associated with spring. This is because it stimulates both digestion and detoxification, supporting the liver and gallbladder.

Spring cleaning doesn't just refer to our spaces! After months of hearty and heavy winter foods, spring is naturally an ideal time to support our detoxification and digestive systems. Increasing the sour taste is a simple and effective way to do so.

    Colour Green

Just like the sour taste, green-coloured foods are also associated with the spring season. Naturally green foods have a revitalizing energy. Which, provides a balancing effect after the slow and stagnant months of winter. The colour green is also associated with the liver, so adding more greens to our diet is another great way to show a little love to this hard-working organ.

    Summer

    Hydrating

Summer is the most important season to ensure we stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids and consuming high-water content foods. On top of the added water and lime juice, apples have a water content of around 85%! Making this Homemade Sour Green Apple & Lime Soda is a delicious and nutritious way to beat the heat and stay hydrated on those hot summer days.

How to Make Homemade Green Apple & Lime Soda Without Added Sugar

Making homemade sugar-free soda couldn't be easier! It only takes a few minutes, and as mentioned above, only a few simple ingredients.

    Equipment Required

    • Juicer
    • Pitcher or Jug

How to Make Fresh Green Apple Juice

If you have a bladed juicer, you will need about 3-4 apples to make one cup of green apple juice. However, if you have a slow juicer, you may only require 1-2 apples.

    Slow vs. Fast Juicers

If you're wondering why you may need a different amount of apples depending on your juicer, here's a little breakdown of the two kinds.

    Slow Juicers (Masticating)

A slow (or masticating) juicer works exactly how it sounds. It slowly presses, chews and squeezes fruits and vegetables through a sharp mesh screen. As a result, they work slower, but you can get much more juice out of much less produce. However, the most beneficial thing about this juice extraction process is that more nutrients and enzymes stay intact.

    Fast Juicers (Centrifrugal)

Compared to slow juicers, fast (or centrifugal) juicers are quick, convenient and much cheaper. They extract juice by pushing fruits and vegetables through a tube and into fast-spinning blades. The juice is then thrown by the force through a mesh screen. Now, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a bladed juicer. They are a fast and easy way to make homemade juice. However, the one downside is that a greater amount of nutrients are destroyed in this process.

That being said, regardless of your juicer, fresh, homemade juice is still full of beneficial enzymes, vitamins and minerals. So, if a fast juicer is what suits your needs, there's no need to worry. You will still be getting much more nutrients than you would from commercially made concentrated juices.

Can You Make Homemade Juice Without A Juicer?

Now, if you don't have a juicer, it still is possible to make juice! However, you do require some sort of blender. The higher the power, the better. But, a good old smoothie blender will do the trick!

To make juice with a blender, simply blend up your apples and then pour the pulp into a fine-mesh strainer (or plant-milk bag) and press or squeeze the juice out.

Mixing Your Sour Green Apple & Lime Soda

Step 1 - Mix Green Apple & Lime Juice

Once you have your fresh green apple juice made, you'll want to add the lime juice right away to prevent oxidization. This simply prevents the juice from turning brown (just like apples do when exposed to oxygen).

However, if oxidization does occur, there's no need to worry! It won't affect the taste, and the colour will brighten back up once the spirulina and lime juice are added.

To mix the apple and lime juice, pour one cup of your freshly made green apple juice into a pitcher or jug. Then stir in two tablespoons of freshly squeezed lime juice.

Step 2 - Mix In Spirulina (Optional)

Next, stir in a dash of spirulina powder. You can mix it in with a whisk or blitz it in a smoothie blender for thirty seconds or so.

If using a blender, make sure to do this step before adding the carbonated water!

Process of spirulina powder being added and mixed into the apple and lime juice.

Step 3 - Pour in Sparkling Water

Now, all that's left to do is add your sparkling (or still) water! Pour one and a half cups of carbonated spring water into the pitcher with the apple and lime juice mixture.

If you prefer less of a sour punch to your homemade Green Apple Soda, simply add in more water. You can add as much as you need until it reaches your desired taste.

A bottle being emptied above a pitcher full of bubbling and foaming Green Apple and Lime Soda.

    Step - Garnish and Serve

You can get extra fancy with this refreshing, bubbly Green Apple Soda by serving in martini or cocktail glasses and garnishing with lime or apple slices! (If garnishing with apple slices, be sure to squeeze a little lemon or lime juice on them to prevent them from oxidizing and turning brown.)

Two glasses filled with Green Apple Soda, garnished with limes, sitting beside a half empty pitcher and a bowl of lime wedges.

How Long Does Homemade Sour Green Apple Soda Last?

Since this healthy homemade soda is naturally sweetened with no added sugar and contains no preservatives, it is best consumed within 24 hours. However, it will last up to 48 hours, if refrigerated in a sealed container.

Due to oxidization, the vibrant green hue does begin to fade into a golden (apple juice) colour after about 4 - 6 hours. So, it is best served fresh, especially for occasions where it's meant to impress.

The dawning of spring has got me thinking a lot ab The dawning of spring has got me thinking a lot about change and how the biggest changes are simply a culmination of tiny steps. Sometimes, so tiny the actualization of them is not even acknowledged, especially when we are constantly looking ahead to new ambitions.

Take my journey with homemade dairy-free milk, for example. Having a steady supply was a task that, at one time, felt a little daunting and intimidating. But, as with anything, a little determination and action can go a long way. After many years, it’s now just second nature to have a rotation of almonds, tigernuts and cashews soaking in the fridge. And for the days I don't, I’ll make a quick batch of coconut milk. It’s a goal I have achieved that I completely overlooked because over time it has become an effortless habit.

So, wild ones, what changes have you made that may have been overlooked? Take a moment to celebrate yourself and revel in how far you’ve come!

And as always, you can find my tigernut and coconut milk recipes on the blog!

Winter is the perfect time to nourish and nurture Winter is the perfect time to nourish and nurture our water element.

This can be done in various ways and may look a little different for each of us.

For some, it might be increasing naturally sodium-rich foods like seaweed, meats, bone broths and brined vegetables.

It could also be getting a healthy dose of bitter foods such as greens, green tea, rapini, cacao and sesame seeds.

It might also look like drinking herbal teas that help flush the kidneys. Dandelion root, ginger, hibiscus and Hawthorne are some yummy ones.

Or increasing foods that support the urinary tract. Cranberries are traditionally favoured in the winter for good reason!

Another way to nurture our water element can be getting in touch with our emotions or taking time for some quiet reflection.

Maybe it’s even just showering yourself with some needed care.

It can also be (one of my personal faves) simply spending time in or near water.

Let me know, wild ones - what’s your favourite way to water yourself?
