Okay, I have to admit, I have yet to perfect a healthy pie crust recipe. Every dairy and gluten-free version I've tried just hasn't cut it. It's a little disheartening that so many recipes for vegan pie crusts call for vegan butter or shortening, and well, most of those contain oils that can become unstable and dangerous to our health when exposed to heat. So, I am bound and determined to get one perfected. One day (hopefully sooner than later), I will get a healthy gluten and dairy-free pie crust down and share it with you.

For now, I just had to share this Easy Homemade Peach Pie Filling because it's seriously so good and so easy! Plus, you can make tons of yummy treats with it, even without any pie or pastry crust.

What Makes This Peach Pie Filling Healthy?

As mentioned above, this peach pie filling has a healthier twist. Its sweetness comes from only peaches and maple syrup. Which means, it contains no refined sugars. It's also thickened with arrowroot rather than cornstarch, making it an excellent anti-inflammatory option.

Not only that, it's also completely dairy-free and vegan! But, you would never guess because it packs a bold peachy-cinnamon flavour, just like a traditional peach pie filling. And it provides the same ooey-gooey goodness too.

    Health Benefits of Peaches

Peaches are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals, making them a healthy option for many! Here's a breakdown of some of their benefits.

    Excellent For Eye Health

Peaches are rich in lutein, a carotenoid that is known for its protective properties against macular degeneration.

    Great For Skin Health

Peaches are a great source of vitamins C and A, both of which contribute to healthy, youthful skin.

    Anti Cancer Properties

Peaches are rich in many vitamins, minerals and flavonoids, which provide powerful antioxidant activity that can protect against cancer formation.

    Beneficial to Heart Health

Another one of the many flavonoids peaches contain is lycopene. Lycopene is known for its protective properties against heart disease. Peaches are also a great source of potassium, which is another essential nutrient for heart health.

    Gut Loving

Peaches can be a beneficial food to help heal the gut. They are a good source of fibre and also provide a moistening and lubricating effect on the intestines. This can be beneficial to those with a dry constitution and help to alleviate constipation.

    Contraindications

Peaches do contain a high amount of oxalates and are best avoided by those prone to or experiencing kidney stones and/or gout.

How to Make Homemade Peach Pie Filling without Cornstarch

I can't emphasize enough just how easy this healthy Peach Pie Filling is!
You only need a handful of ingredients and about fifteen to twenty minutes.

    Slice or Chop Peaches

Since this recipe uses fresh peaches, you will first need to slice or chop your peaches. Unless I'm making hand pies, I like to slice my peaches as you would for a traditional peach pie. However, bigger slices can be challenging to stuff into hand pies. So, in that case, I chop the peaches into small cubes. Thay way, I can get more filling squished in!

    Add Ingredients to A Saucepan

Next, add four cups of chopped or sliced peaches into a medium saucepan. Then add in half a cup of maple syrup, half a teaspoon of cinnamon, half a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract and Mix well.

    Heat & Add Arrowroot Flour

Now, place the saucepan over medium heat, stirring often. As it heats, the peaches should start to release their juices. Once they do, add in two to four tablespoons of arrowroot flour. (Start with two and add more if you desire a thicker consistency).

    Bring to A Boil & Simmer for 10 - 15 Minutes

Keep heating over medium and bring to a light boil.

Once the mixture begins to bubble, turn the heat down to medium-low. Allow to simmer for about ten minutes, or until thickened to your likeness. Stir often to prevent sticking or burning.

A bowl of freshly sliced peaches with a bowl of maple syrup and spoonfuls of arrowroot, vanilla extract and cinnamon surrounding in a half circle.
A saucepan filled with freshly made peach pie filling and a linen cloth laying underneath the handle.

Remove From Heat & Let Cool

Once your Fresh Peach Pie Filling has thickened, remove it from the heat and allow it cool before handling.

If you will be baking with this Peach Pie Filling, leave it on the runnier side as it will thicken further when baking. But, if you will be using it for no-bake goodies, like overnight oats, allow it to thicken as much as you desire.

    Use Right Away or Jar

You can use this Homemade Peach Pie Filling right away, or can it for later use.
It will last up to seven days stored in the refrigerator.

    • Top on Granola

Best Seasons to Enjoy Fresh Peach Pie Filling

    Late Summer

Here in Canada, peaches are in season from late July to late August. This is a great time to enjoy them as they are hydrating and so refreshing on a summer day.

    Autumn

Believe it or not, peaches are one fruit that can help to dispel cold from the body! So, even though they are a summer fruit, they can also be enjoyed during the cooler months. Especially with the warming cinnamon in this Fresh Peach Pie Filling, it can be wonderful to enjoy in the autumn when the temperatures begin to drop.

Thanks to the warming notes of cinnamon and allspice, it's great for those chilly mornings. However, it’s the rich vanilla flavour that makes it so irresistible!

Especially when using @javasistersvanilla Vanilla Extract. It comes with the bean in, which gives it a stronger, more robust flavour, almost like you are using the bean itself! So. Dang. Delicious 👏

For me, being a sucker for those warming spices, Gingerbread is at the top of that list. A close second to my Gran’s shortbread (which I still have yet to master a healthified version 🤞).

But, at least for now, I can count on these crunchy gingerbread cookies to satisfy my festive cravings.

Traditionally spiced with just the right amount of crunch, they taste just like the real deal. But, without the refined sugar, gluten and dairy ⛄️
