Is Homemade Sour Green Apple & Lime Soda Healthy?
This Homemade Green Apple and Lime Soda is a much healthier option for many reasons. It's hydrating, naturally sweet, and made with nutritious, whole-food ingredients that offer immune-supporting and detoxifying properties.
This healthy homemade soda is full of immune-supporting nutrients and free of immune-suppressing sugars!
Rich In Quercetin
Apples are a great source of quercetin. However, the skin of the apple contains the most concentrated amount. That's why it's always best to opt for organic / non-sprayed apples.
Quercetin is a potent antioxidant that has quite the immune-supporting power. It helps to ward off the common cold and flu and can even reduce allergy symptoms and inflammatory responses.
It's also the main medicinal ingredient in an elusive pharmaceutical that starts with an H. Wink, wink.
Rich In Vitamin C
Both apples and limes are great sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C is another key player in immune health and antioxidant activity.
Vitamin C is a nutrient that the body doesn't produce itself, so our bodies rely on food sources (or supplementation). It's also a nutrient that is very easily depleted, especially under stress.
However, one great thing about vitamin C is that it's water-soluble, which means the body simply excretes any excess. So, there is absolutely no harm in eating an abundance of vitamin C rich foods!
Free of Refined Sugar
Refined sugar is a major culprit that suppresses the immune system for hours after ingestion. Thankfully, this does not mean the naturally occurring sugars in fruits and vegetables do the same.
Consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables (preferably organically grown) is one of the best ways to support the immune system. This ensures we get all the vital nutrients needed to keep our bodily systems optimally functioning.
Thanks to the fresh green apple and lime juice, this Healthy Sour Green Apple Soda is naturally sweet. So, no added sugars of any kind are necessary.
Fresh juice is full of beneficial enzymes that aid in the breakdown and absorption of nutrients. Plus, both apple and lime contain digestive stimulating properties.
The sour taste stimulates two of our most important detoxifying organs, the gallbladder and the liver. Plus, if you add in a dash of spirulina it gives it an extra boost of detoxifying nutrients.

How to Make Homemade Green Apple & Lime Soda Without Added Sugar
Making homemade sugar-free soda couldn't be easier! It only takes a few minutes, and as mentioned above, only a few simple ingredients.
- Pitcher or Jug
How to Make Fresh Green Apple Juice
If you have a bladed juicer, you will need about 3-4 apples to make one cup of green apple juice. However, if you have a slow juicer, you may only require 1-2 apples.
Slow vs. Fast Juicers
If you're wondering why you may need a different amount of apples depending on your juicer, here's a little breakdown of the two kinds.
Slow Juicers (Masticating)
A slow (or masticating) juicer works exactly how it sounds. It slowly presses, chews and squeezes fruits and vegetables through a sharp mesh screen. As a result, they work slower, but you can get much more juice out of much less produce. However, the most beneficial thing about this juice extraction process is that more nutrients and enzymes stay intact.
Fast Juicers (Centrifugal)
Compared to slow juicers, fast (or centrifugal) juicers are quick, convenient and much cheaper. They extract juice by pushing fruits and vegetables through a tube and into fast-spinning blades. The juice is then thrown by the force through a mesh screen. Now, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a bladed juicer. They are a fast and easy way to make homemade juice. However, the one downside is that a greater amount of nutrients are destroyed in this process.
That being said, regardless of your juicer, fresh, homemade juice is still full of beneficial enzymes, vitamins and minerals. So, if a fast juicer is what suits your needs, there's no need to worry. You will still be getting much more nutrients than you would from commercially made concentrated juices.
Can You Make Homemade Juice Without A Juicer?
Now, if you don't have a juicer, it still is possible to make juice! However, you do require some sort of blender. The higher the power, the better. But, a good old smoothie blender will do the trick!
To make juice with a blender, simply blend up your apples and then pour the pulp into a fine-mesh strainer (or plant-milk bag) and press or squeeze the juice out.
Mixing Your Sour Green Apple & Lime Soda
Step 1 - Mix Green Apple & Lime Juice
Once you have your fresh green apple juice made, you'll want to add the lime juice right away to prevent oxidization. This simply prevents the juice from turning brown (just like apples do when exposed to oxygen).
However, if oxidization does occur, there's no need to worry! It won't affect the taste, and the colour will brighten back up once the spirulina and lime juice are added.
To mix the apple and lime juice, pour one cup of your freshly made green apple juice into a pitcher or jug. Then stir in two tablespoons of freshly squeezed lime juice.
Step 2 - Mix In Spirulina (Optional)
Next, stir in a dash of spirulina powder. You can mix it in with a whisk or blitz it in a smoothie blender for thirty seconds or so.
If using a blender, make sure to do this step before adding the carbonated water!
Step 3 - Pour in Sparkling Water
Now, all that's left to do is add your sparkling (or still) water! Pour one and a half cups of carbonated spring water into the pitcher with the apple and lime juice mixture.
If you prefer less of a sour punch to your homemade Green Apple Soda, simply add in more water. You can add as much as you need until it reaches your desired taste.
Step - Garnish and Serve
You can get extra fancy with this refreshing, bubbly Green Apple Soda by serving in martini or cocktail glasses and garnishing with lime or apple slices! (If garnishing with apple slices, be sure to squeeze a little lemon or lime juice on them to prevent them from oxidizing and turning brown.)
How Long Does Homemade Sour Green Apple Soda Last?
Since this healthy homemade soda is naturally sweetened with no added sugar and contains no preservatives, it is best consumed within 24 hours. However, it will last up to 48 hours, if refrigerated in a sealed container.
Due to oxidization, the vibrant green hue does begin to fade into a golden (apple juice) colour after about 4 - 6 hours. So, it is best served fresh, especially for occasions where it's meant to impress.
