The Importance of Staying Hydrated In Times of Stress

We all know it's important to stay hydrated, but did you know it's even more important to keep the body hydrated when under stress?

Water being poured out of a glass bottle into a drinking glass.

Water is more imperative to our health than most are aware of. Through advertisements pushing soda, coffee, alcohol, energy drinks and other sugar-laden beverages, along with the lack of education about the many chemical roles of water, we are led to believe that drinking water isn't quite as essential as it truly is.

Why It's Important to Stay Hydrated Under Stress

    Reduces Water Retention

Especially when it comes to stress, it's necessary to frequently remind the body that it has access to water. When the body is stressed, whether it be from imminent danger or daily life stressors, the body responds as if it may need to preserve water stores.

This means the body goes into something called water rationing, where the supply of water to certain organs becomes restricted, especially the ones that don't need to respond to immediate physical danger. If this goes on long-term without staying adequately hydrated, it can lead to many different health issues.

By taking a sip of water every half hour or so, it signals to the body that there is access to water and therefore, no need to ration.

    Propper Immune Function

Hydration is one of many factors that keep not only our immune systems functioning optimally but also our brains and hearts, along with all of our other organs and countless other vital functions.

I know for many, making the switch from the flavourful sips we've grown accustomed to can be a challenge. And for some, it can be difficult to remember to stop and hydrate in between a jam-packed schedule or when caring for loved ones.

So, here are my five favourite ways to drink more water every day. They may seem simple, and you may have heard them before, but combined with the will to improve and support your health, they do work!

5 Ways to Drink More Water

    • Start each morning with a mug of warm lemon water
    • Drink 8oz of water before each meal
    • Switch it up with some herbal teas
    • Boost the flavour by squeezing in fresh citrus juice, or add berries, cucumber, sprigs of lemongrass, or anything else your heart desires
    • Set a reminder every half-hour (or whatever timing works for you) to have a sip

Thanks to the warming notes of cinnamon and allspice, it's great for those chilly mornings. However, it’s the rich vanilla flavour that makes it so irresistible!

Especially when using @javasistersvanilla Vanilla Extract. It comes with the bean in, which gives it a stronger, more robust flavour, almost like you are using the bean itself! So. Dang. Delicious 👏

Add some extra lavishness and warmth to your smoothie by topping it with a sprinkle of cinnamon, and you will be in heaven ✨

As each year brings, 2022 brought many moments to be grateful for, a few new skills and lots of growth through both the struggles and triumphs. 2022, for me, was truly a year of tuning out to tune in. And I’m so excited to see what this next chapter brings.

What’s your must-have holiday cookie? For me, b What’s your must-have holiday cookie?

For me, being a sucker for those warming spices, Gingerbread is at the top of that list. A close second to my Gran’s shortbread (which I still have yet to master a healthified version 🤞).

But, at least for now, I can count on these crunchy gingerbread cookies to satisfy my festive cravings.

Traditionally spiced with just the right amount of crunch, they taste just like the real deal. But, without the refined sugar, gluten and dairy ⛄️
